Week 18: Let’s Write a Screenplay in 2024!
For those continuing with our challenge to write a screenplay before the year is up, it’s time to dive back into your script! If you've been following along since January 1, you should now be stepping into the second draft phase. For anyone who took a brief hiatus last week to refresh, now is the moment to re-engage with your script.
Rewriting is often where the real magic happens, shaping your initial ideas into something more refined and cohesive. This week and over the next few weeks, you'll be dedicating your efforts to revising your first draft. Here are a couple of tips to guide you through this stage:
Read It Out Loud: Experience your script as your audience might by reading it out loud. This will help you catch awkward phrasing and dialogue that might look good on paper but doesn’t sound natural when spoken.
Proofread: Pay close attention to spelling, grammar, and formatting. Cleaning up these small details can make a big difference in how your script is perceived.
As you work through this second draft, remember that each revision brings you closer to a fully realized story that you'll be proud to share. Keep the momentum going—your dedication will pay off!

This week, we're focusing on a relatable family drama.
Location: Inside (INT) – A family kitchen
Characters: Emily (12)
Set the Scene: The kitchen is bright and cozy. Emily stands by the kitchen table, a determined look on her face. Her parents are preparing dinner.
Prompt: Emily has been pleading with her parents to let her get her ears pierced. She thinks it's the perfect way to express her growing sense of identity. However, her parents are hesitant. The conversation becomes a heartfelt discussion about growing up, responsibilities, and trust. How does Emily try to convince her parents? What are their reservations? Explore the dynamics of this family conversation and decide whether Emily's parents will ultimately agree or if they stand firm on their decision. Write a scene that captures this family moment.
That's it for this week's Museletter! We hope it inspired you to write. Your stories are important, and every sentence you add brings you one step closer to a finished story you can share with the world!
