Week 19: Let’s Write a Screenplay in 2024!
It’s week 19 in our journey to write a screenplay in 2024, and we’re continuing the art of the rewrite this week!
As we enter the third week of the rewriting phase, take another read of your screenplay and continue to refine it.
There’s always something new to check for, whether it’s pacing, subtext, or consistency. For those who paused for a breather after finishing your first draft, now's the time to jump back in with fresh eyes.
Remember, rewriting is not just about fixing errors; it’s an opportunity to deepen your characters, tighten your plot, and enhance your dialogue. Here are some focused tips to help you this week:
Subtext Over On-the-Nose: Challenge yourself to convey emotions and motivations through subtext rather than direct dialogue. It will enrich your characters and engage your readers more effectively.
Structure and Pace: Take a critical look at the structure and pacing of your scenes. Are there moments that drag? Could a scene be more dynamic? Sometimes, condensing or combining scenes can significantly impact your script’s momentum. Try to begin each scene on either a positive or negative charge, and leave the scene on the opposite charge, to keep things moving along.
Consistency Check: Ensure character behaviors, story rules, and world details remain consistent throughout the script. Inconsistencies can pull an audience out of the story, so align all elements to build a credible world.
Let this quote be your guide as you refine your screenplay.
"Rewriting is where the game is won or lost; rewriting is the essence of writing." - William Goldman
Each change, each edit, and each revision brings you closer to a script that not only reads well but resonates more deeply with your reader! And they’re the first gatekeeper to impress.
This is your penultimate week of rewriting—make it count! Next week, we'll start wrapping up and preparing for the feedback process.

This week, let's dive into an island mystery.
Location: Exterior (EXT) – Remote Island
Characters: Mia (30s, wildlife biologist), Jan (50s, wildlife biologist)
Set the Scene: The remote, windswept shores of a seemingly deserted island. Mia, equipped with a backpack and a notebook, steps off a small boat with a crew in tow. She’s met by another scientist, Jan, who’s already on the island.
Prompt: As Mia is greeted by Jan, she quickly learns that the problem her team has been summoned to solve is much worse than she anticipated. What does Jan tell her as she steps off the boat that increases the tension and the shortens the timeline to fix the problem? Write a scene that lays the groundwork for the challenge that Mia and her team are up against.
That's it for this week's Museletter! We hope it inspired you to write. Your stories are important, and every sentence you add brings you one step closer to a finished story you can share with the world!
